Most families go through an almost predictable phase where gradually the elder becomes more and more dependent upon the adult child. At the same time, many elders resist the process of relying more on the very children they raised.
This can launch an inevitable series of conflicts. Quite often there is one primary caregiver who feels the brunt of this pressure, and if they are not careful, they will experience what is called "caregiver burnout."
I had the privilege of helping hundreds of seniors and their families work through these stressors and resolve the conflicts presented. I was blessed to work in long-term care, rehab facilities, and on an inpatient mental health hospital.
Grieving the death of spouses and lack of contact with adult children and grandchildren is very common. For adult children, it is very common to have unresolved emotional pain regarding the way you were raised.
Long-term conflict with a spouse is also not unusual. I have had clients who were married over 60 years and still had pain related to something that occurred in the early years of their marriage.
